
Human Design & the Unbecoming: How I Stopped Trying to Be Someone I Was Never Built to Be

I didn't set out to have a revelation. I set out to learn more about my Human Design. (a little nod to the Instagram trend “mom… What did you look like in the 90s?)) well that was me.! and what is now my current husband… That I can tell you what… I am absolutely not the same person that was in this picture!…. I'm a Generator — which means I've spent the better part of my life being told, in so many words, that the way I'm designed to operate is somehow too passive. Too reactive. That waiting to respond rather than initiating made me less driven, less ambitious, less likely to get where I wanted to go.
So I did what most of us do. I initiated anyway. I pushed. I built a version of myself that looked like she had it together — one that said yes before her gut even had a chance to weigh in, followed the formulas, chased the opportunities that looked right on paper, and performed the role of someone who already knew exactly where she was headed.
It worked. Mostly. Until it didn't.
The morning everything started to unravel — in the best possible way
I came to Human Design the way a lot of people do: curious but skeptical. I'd heard enough about it to be intrigued and not quite enough to fully commit to believing it. But something about that morning felt different. I went deep. I sat with my chart, my profile, my defined and undefined centers — and somewhere in the middle of all of it, something quiet and uncomfortable surfaced.
I have been living someone else's design.
Not in a dramatic, life-imploding way. In that slow, low-grade way that's easy to miss because you're so busy executing. The kind of misalignment that doesn't announce itself — it just quietly costs you. Energy. Authenticity. The feeling of actually inhabiting your own life.
As a pure Generator, I am literally designed to respond — to let life bring things to me and then check in with my sacral, that deep gut intelligence that knows before my mind does. My energy is sustainable, powerful, and built for mastery — but only when it's pointed at things that have my genuine yes. Not a socially conditioned yes. Not a fear-based yes. A real one.
I had been bypassing that sacral response for years. Initiating from my head, committing from pressure, and then wondering why I felt so relentlessly drained doing things I thought I wanted.
Then Joe Dispenza walked into the conversation
If Human Design gave me the map, Dispenza gave me the explanation for why the old one had such a grip on me.
His work on the subconscious mind and the body's role in keeping us anchored to familiar emotional states hit differently once I understood my design. Because here's what becomes clear when you put the two together: it's not enough to knowyou've been running old programming. Your body has to catch up. Your nervous system has to be shown — repeatedly, gently, and sometimes uncomfortably — that a different way of being is actually safe.
The quantum field, as he describes it, responds to who you are being. Not your affirmations. Not your vision board. The actual frequency your body is broadcasting moment to moment. And if your body is still in the survival patterns of the person you're trying to leave behind? That's the signal going out. That's what keeps regenerating the same experiences with slightly different faces on them.
This is where it stopped being intellectual for me and started being felt.
The nervous system piece nobody wants to talk about
Here's the part that doesn't make it into most transformation content because it isn't photogenic: the regulated nervous system is the foundation of all of it.
You can know your Human Design inside out. You can understand Dispenza's model of the quantum field. You can have the most beautifully articulated new story ready to go — and if your nervous system is still running a threat response underneath it all, none of it fully lands. Your body will keep pulling you back to what's familiar because familiar, even when it's painful, registers as safe.
Regulation isn't meditation aesthetics and soft lighting. It's the slow, sometimes tedious, often nonlinear process of teaching your body that it's okay to relax into who you actually are. That you don't have to perform. That stillness isn't the same as falling behind.
That last one took me a long time.
As a Generator, the cultural message is initiate, hustle, make it happen. And I can move mountains — sustainably, joyfully — when what I'm building has my full sacral yes behind it. The version of that effort that came from a dysregulated, people-pleasing, prove-it-to-yourself place? It cost far more than it ever returned. Frustration was the signal I kept ignoring. Turns out frustration is the Generator's body saying this was never really yours.
What the unbecoming actually looks like
It doesn't look like a breakthrough. It looks like a Tuesday where you notice you didn't override your gut response for the first time in a while. It looks like saying no to something that would have previously gotten an automatic yes because it looked like the right move. It looks like choosing rest without justifying it. It looks like trusting that your timing is not the same as everyone else's — and that this is a feature, not a flaw.
The transformation that's worth having is rarely the one that looks like transformation from the outside. It's quieter. More internal. And it requires you to be willing to stop performing the version of yourself that everyone — including you — got comfortable with.
Human Design gave me permission to stop pretending my nature was a problem to be solved.
Dispenza gave me a framework for understanding why the old identity had such staying power.
Nervous system work gave me the actual ground to stand on while I rebuilt.
Together, they form the invisible architecture of the most significant shift I've ever made. Not a reinvention. An unbecoming. And underneath it — finally, unmistakably — me.
